ÞE TALE OF TOM CIT BI BEATRIX POTTER ǷENDED BI Ye_who_you_spake_of (þrucced 1907)

Ones upon a time þere ƿere þree littel cits, and þeger names ƿere Mittens, Tom Cit, and Moppet.

Þeg had dear littel heerpoads of þeger oƿn; and þeg ƿeltered abute þe doorstep and plaged in þe dust.

But one dag þeger moðer--Gƿf. Tabitha Tƿitchit--ƿeened frends to tea; so sce fecced þe cits indoors, to ƿasc and ƿeed þem, before þe smicker hoose lended.

First sce skrubbed þeger ansens.

Þen sce sƿept þeger heer.

Þen sce combed þeger tails and hƿiskers.

Tom ƿas sƿiðe nauhtig, and he skracced.

Gƿf. Tabitha ƿeeded Moppet and Mittens in clean pinafores and tuckers; and þen sce took all sorts of ƿrast þornig cloðes ute of a cest of draƿers, soasto to ƿeed up her son Thomas.

Tom Cit ƿas sƿiðe fat, and he had groƿn; manifold knaps berst off. His moðer seƿed þem on agen.

Hƿen þe þree cits ƿere readig, Gƿf. Tabitha unƿiselig hƿarfed þem ute into þe ƿorttun, to be ute of þe ƿag hƿile sce made hot buttered brunedbread.

"Nu keep geƿer scifts clean, cildren! Geƿ must ƿalk on geƿer hind leggs. Keep aƿag from þe dirtig ascpit, and from Sally Henny Penny, and from þe piggstig and þe Puddelducks."

Moppet and Mittens ƿalked dune þe ƿorttun pað unsteadilig. Nuðe þeg trod upon þeger pinafores and fell on þeger noses.

Hƿen þeg stood up þere ƿere sere green smears!

"Let us climb up þe rockig and sit on þe ƿorttun ƿall," said Moppet.

Þeg hƿarfed þeger pinafores back to fore and ƿent up ƿið a skip and a braid; Moppet's hƿite tucker fell dune into þe road.

Tom Cit ƿas sƿiðe unfindig to braid hƿen ƿalking upon his hind leggs in trusers. He came up þe rockig bi rungs, breaking þe ferns and scedding knaps riht and left.

He ƿas all in deals hƿen he reaced þe top of þe ƿall.

Moppet and Mittens fanded to pull him togeðer; his hat fell off, and þe rest of his knaps berst.

Hƿile þeg ƿere in dƿales, þere ƿas a pit pat, paddel pat! and þe þree Puddelducks came along þe hard hihe road, faring one behind þe oðer and doing þe goosestep-- pit pat, paddel pat! pit pat, ƿaddle pat!

Þeg stopped and stood in a roƿ and stared up at þe cit. Þeg had sƿiðe small eges and looked sceocked. Þen þe tƿo duckbirds, Rebeccah and Jemima Puddelduck, picked up þe hat and tucker and put þem on.

Mittens lauhed so þat sce fell off þe ƿall. Moppet and Tom reesed after her; þe pinafores and all þe rest of Tom's cloðes came off on þe ƿag dune.

"Cum! Gƿr. Drake Puddelduck," said Moppet. "Cum and help us to ƿeed him! Cum and knap up Tom!"

Gƿr. Drake Puddelduck ganged in a sloƿ sideƿags ƿise and picked up þe manifold teƿs.

But he put þem on HIMSELF! Þeg fitted him efen ƿorse þan Tom Cit.

"It's a sƿiðe smicker morning!" said Gƿr. Drake Puddelduck.

And he and Jemima and Rebeccah Puddelduck set off up þe road, keeping step--pit pat, paddel pat! pit pat, ƿaddle pat!

Þen Tabitha Tƿitchit came dune þe ƿorttun and fund her cits on þe ƿall ƿið no cloðes on.

Sce pulled þem off þe ƿall, smacked þem, and took þem back to þe hus.

"Mi frends ƿill lend in a ƿee, and geƿ are not fit to be seen; I am grilled," said Gƿf. Tabitha Tƿitchit.

Sce sent þem upstairs; and I am sorrig to sag sce told her frends þat þeg ƿere in bed ƿið þe measels-- hƿic ƿas not treƿ.

Sƿiðe þe ƿiðer; þeg ƿere not in bed: NOT in þe least.

Sumhu þere ƿere sƿiðe sellig sunds oferhead, hƿic harroƿed þe manscip and stillness of þe teasimbel.

And I þink þat sum dag I sceal haf to make anoðer, greater book, to tell geƿ more abute Tom Cit!

As for þe Puddelducks--þeg ƿent into a pond.

Þe cloðes all came off streihtlig, forþat þere ƿere no knaps.

And Gƿr. Drake Puddelduck, and Jemima and Rebeccah, haf been looking for þem efer sins.
